With these pages I wanted more media exploration. I explored lino printing. I worked from primary photos looking at signage however I didn’t like how the letters appeared on this type of print. I much preferred the way the train station came out particularly as I could add much more detail and line work. Here shows me printing the piece repetitively to get the best result (placed in my sketchbook). I made minor modifications in terms of the logo as I much preferred it as negative space. I think my print could’ve been much more refined as the ink transferred unevenly which could’ve been resolved with better pressure applied. In terms of going forward I think this would be a nice technique to use and it would be interesting to explore colour somehow.
Here displays how I want to narrow down my ideas to mundane/ disregarded aspects of the city. These being things like cones, traffic lights etc. I feel as though they are seen as such boring irrelevant aspects however to me I think it’s what defines city life. I feel as though through my quick observational drawings my project was naturally headed in this type of direction. This double page shows a variety of things around York using pen, pastels and pencils. I also explored a Japanese hole punch which was really interesting as you could gain so much precision. I think it turned out really effective, I liked the pattern it created and will probably use it later on.
Following on from this I explored screen printing again however on a smaller scale and committed to more prints to work into. I looked at lampposts and pedestrian crossing lights alternating designs and cutting into them. What I liked about this page is that I experimented with type trying to represent the object through the word. I went purely off the structure and colour to present the letters. This will definitely benefit me for further work as I love the incorporation of illustration with type and thinking about their composition.
Here repeats the same idea as I committed to these screen prints at the same time. I referenced back to my observational drawings and then worked into them once they dried. I used pen, embroidery, layering etc. I think for these pieces I potentially could’ve explored using more colour however working on mass like this helped me decipher what worked effectively. Speaking of this my favourite design (as labelled in my book), I loved because of the use of line and simplicity, purely sticking over a cut out of the letter H. This then pushed me further as I took this design and explored an alphabet.
Here shows me displaying rough ideas of the print as an alphabet. This definitely gave me an idea of a more finalised product, not even that but more so how a design can be transformed into many different pathways. I explored the word ‘hotel’ something I’ve learnt within type is to always look at the composition of a word first, rather than just the letters. I think it gives a better understanding of what technically looks right and wrong. Whether all the letters are in unison and look like they belong together. I would refine this further if I felt it was going to be more suited to my final outcome however at this stage I think it was something interesting to explore that taught me a lot about configuration as a whole.
Near the end of this week carried through to the next I visited the city of Hamburg. Here shows a double page spread of some rough sketches and observational drawings of things around the area. As well as leaflets/ tickets taken from events. After visiting I knew a big foundation of my final work would be based off the city due to my liking towards it. I feel like this is because its something different I’m used to seeing so it gives me so many new interesting concepts to focus on. I also think having a contrast in cities was something I always wanted to show. I just loved the cleanliness of it and the structure of modernised buildings/ monuments. As well as the bend in traffic lights as it was something so simplistic yet new to the eye. This was definitely one of the focus points for me.
Primary photos taken from city that I took great reference/ inspiration to.
